About Sessions 88 / Maenporth, Cornwall

Pull up a stool
at the grand piano.

I’m George. I teach piano in Maenporth, just outside Falmouth. When you sit down at the grand, the first thing I want to know is what you love listening to. If there’s a song you’ve always wanted to play, that’s a good place for us to start.

01 / The lessons

Beyond the grades.

I leave grades and exams out of my lessons. I want you to be able to hear a tune, find it on the keys and work out what to do when the chords change. Those are skills you can take into any song you fancy playing.

We train your ear by listening together. We might pick out a vocal line from a track you love, then try a few chords underneath it. That’s where theory gets fun. You can hear for yourself how changing one note gives a whole chorus a different feel.

You choose the style and the pace. There’s no homework and I don’t expect you to turn up having practised. If you want to spend the whole session finding your way around four bars you love, we can do that. We’ll pick up from wherever you are next time.

02 / Your teacher

A bit about me.

I’ve been playing piano for over 20 years and I run a band. I’ve got a soft spot for jazz and experimental music, but I play across styles and I’m always interested in what someone else brings to the piano.

Over the past two years I’ve taught more than 30 students. Everyone finds their own way in. My job is to notice what clicks for you and help you build on it, at whatever pace feels right.
